Campaign Contributions Made by Credit Card Banks
Americans have no one to blame but themselves for the outrageous interest rates and fees associated with credit cards. Why? Because most Americans don't bother to vote and 90% of incumbent senators and representatives are elected year after year. While Americans are sitting on the sidelines, credit card companies are lobbying Congress and contributing heavily to election campaign funds.
It shouldn't surprise you that Republicans receive more campaign contributions from the banking industry than Democrats do since the former tend to support business-friendly legislation more than the latter. It also shouldn't surprise you that the largest single corporate donor to George Bush's 2000 election campaign was a credit card company, MBNA.
In elections held from 2000 to 2004, the top ten credit card companies contributed the following amounts to various campaigns (amounts are rounded, in millions). These amounts do not include the millions they spend on lobbyists. Note that federal legislation limits the amount corporations can give to candidates. |
