Ways to Save More Money By Haggling

General Tips on Saving While Shopping

Haggle, haggle, haggle.  Don’t be afraid to negotiate for a lower price when you are shopping for consumer electronics, kitchen appliances, small appliances, televisions, computers, cars, boats, mattresses and many other items.  It doesn’t matter if you are buying a new car or television; always ask the sales person if you can get a better price.  Men are much more likely to haggle for a lower price than women, and they often get it, particularly on cars and electronics. For example:

  • Research has shown that you can save about $200 off the price of high-dollar electronics and appliances if you haggle.
  • Calling a company that provides you some sort of service, such as cable or telecom, can often save you anywhere between $10 and $50 per month.
  • Questioning an item on a hospital bill can save you about $300
  • Negotiating for a better price on jewelry saves about $150
  • Haggling with a sales person at a furniture store will save you about $300
  • Those who ask for free shipping with their online purchases often get it
  • When buying a house, always offer 20 percent less than the asking price
  • Always ask for a discount if an item is damaged or imperfect
  • Keep your feelings to yourself and remain silent when the sales person makes an offer since it will often result in an even lower offer

You can also lower your monthly bills by asking the companies with whom you do business to lower your monthly bill in some way either by offering to charge you their competitor’s lower rate, reversing a recent rate increase or just negotiating a lower rate.  You can do this with your Internet provider, phone company, credit card, or cable company.   You have nothing to lose by asking -- all they can do is say no -- but you might save $20 or more than $500 per year.
